How Has Singapore Punched Above Its Weight? Through Its SMEs

Cover: How Has Singapore Punched Above Its Weight? Through Its SMEs

The short answer: through its SMEs. The usual story of Singapore's rise stars the big names: the port, the airlines, the banks, the multinationals on reclaimed land. The quieter truth is in the composition of the economy itself. By the government's own count, small and medium enterprises make up around 99% of all enterprises here, employ about two-thirds of the workforce and account for roughly half of GDP. The famous skyline stands on a base of workshops, contractors, wholesalers, clinics, kitchens and family firms.

No hinterland, no resources, no excuses

A trading post with no oil, no farmland and no domestic market of real size should not, on paper, be a top-tier economy. The national strategy gets deserved credit. But strategy only works if someone executes it at street level, and that someone was overwhelmingly small: the subcontractor who hit the multinational's quality bar, the logistics firm that made "reliable" a national brand, the towkay who retooled the shop every time the economy changed shape.

The resilient layer

Multinationals are mobile by design; when costs shift, they can shift too. The SME layer stays. It absorbed independence, oil shocks, SARS, the 2008 crisis and a pandemic, and after each one it adapted, often within a single generation of a single family. When people say Singapore is resilient, this layer is mostly what they are describing. SMEs are, in a very real sense, the reason Singapore survived.

Punching above your weight is a habit, not an event

That last point is the whole game. A small team only outperforms its size when every member is fully informed and fully capable, which is why we think the humblest lever in business, how you train your people, is Singapore's next round of punching above its weight. We wrote about the practical side of that in the best onboarding process for staff.

Train your team the way people actually learn. Our Learning Management System turns your onboarding and training into short videos with quizzes, localised into the languages your workers speak, running on a server in your own office. One-time setup at S$5,000. Reach out at admin@holdtheholding.com.
